Solid verus engineered wood floors

Solid hardwood floors are made entirely of timber, about 3/4 of an inch thick. Even though they are more expensive than engineered and laminate flooring, there are many benefits associated with hardwood floors. They are durable, can be sanded and refinished time and time again and can last you more than a life time.

Because solid hardwood floors are a natural product, they create a certain warmth and homeyness.  There is a large selection of wood species to choose from, as well as many board sizes and stain colors, so matching hardwood floors with the rest of your home should be a fairly easy process. Solid wood floors are nailed or stapled down (not glued or floating).

Hardwood floors are sought after by many home buyers and add value to a home. They are the material of choice for flooring and those who can afford solid wood floors.  Engineered wood is better than solid wood when it comes to moisture – solid hardwood floors should not be installed in bathrooms and if installed in a kitchen, having a rubber mat by the sink is highly recommended to protect your floor from spills.

Engineered hardwood floors are made of layers – a thin slice of solid wood atop a layers of plywood.  Unlike solid wood boards, most engineered boards come pre-finished (already stained). Because the layer of solid wood is actually pretty thin, most engineered wood boards can only be lightly sanded once or twice before they have to be replaced.

Engineered wood floors are durable, but not as much as solid wood. Because the solid wood surface is thin, it can chipp, scratch or become de-laminated if stressed beyond normal conditions. Engineered wood are easier to install than solid wood floor since they are many ways to install them including stappling, nailing, glue and fold and lock. Just as solid wood floors, engineered wood floors improve the value, both perceived and actual, of a home.

FINISHED OR UNFINISHED Wood FLOORS?

Unfinished wood boards offer the option of having floors stained to the desired color on location and sealed for water resistance. This makes the process of matching floors with the rest of the home a lot easier easier. But it also involved more work and more cost.

Finished wood boards come already pre-stained and coated from the factory. It makes the process of installing floors a lot faster since there is no staining or applying multiple coats of urethane.
